Terry Eagleton. Saints and Scholars. 1987. Yow. A literary critic who can actually write! This is a fine piece of historical fiction, with the emphasis on fiction, involving Wittgenstein and James Connoloy and their chance meeting on the Irish coast. I found it entertaining, informative, and well-executed. It was a nice surprise. Wittgensteinian fiction has almost become a genre of its own, and this novel must be near the pinnacle of the genre. The impassioned political arias elevate this through literature and out the sky. April 23, 2006 |
