The CIA in the Dock. 1983. Edited by V. Chernyavsky. Compiled by Progress Publishers. Translated into English by Cynthia Carlile. An anthology of essays by Soviet journalists about various CIA activites. I found this book by accident. In the UIUC stacks it was shelved next to Washington Station, in what seems to be the Dewey Decimal call number range for books about the CIA published in Russia. Most of the writing is excellent, and surprising in the conviction and passion and morality of the authors - not what we would expect from the red menace the CIA supposedly protected us from. The articles are about the revelations concerning CIA assassinations from the mid-1970s, the coup in Chile, Libya, Radio Free Europe, the arming of the Afghan Mujahadin, and Caseygate (1980). The article on the coup in Chile is exceptionally good, exemplifying the authors' abilities to weave their journalism with traces of a 1st-person account of their investigations. I don't think it's always a good idea to include photos of authors, but in this case I like it because these writers are all totally unknown to me. I imagine this book is out of print and was barely ever in print but there's a copy in a library in Illinois. |
